Skip this section if... you have never had Outlook installed on the Exchange server or the server on which you are installing Add2Exchange. |
|
Important Do not install Outlook on the Exchange Server. DidItBetter Software does not support installing Add2Exchange on a server with any other version of CDO than the latest appropriate for your version and service pack level of Exchange. |
Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) is the interface used by Add2Exchange, Exchange System Manager and other products to communicate with the Exchange Server. Microsoft Outlook also has a version of CDO, however it is significantly different since it is aimed at the desktop rather than the server environment.
When you install Outlook on your Exchange Server, it registers its version of CDO in preference to the Exchange version. According to both Microsoft's official knowledge base articles as well as the Exchange Server development team's weblog postings, the two are not compatible, are not supported and can even result in crashing your Exchange Server. Refer to the following articles:

If you have other CDO-based products on your server that are currently functioning correctly, such as BlackBerry Enterprise Server, leave Outlook installed and install Add2Exchange on another server rather than risk affecting other services by uninstalling Outlook. In this case you may skip the rest of this section.
Otherwise, if Outlook is installed but you have not yet installed Add2Exchange, or you have not yet built relationships, you can uninstall Outlook safely.
When uninstalling Outlook, it is strongly recommended that you uninstall all Office components so that no other administrator is tempted to install Outlook. If someone else sees Office installed without Outlook, it is easy to think it would be ok to install the "missing" component.
If you have already installed Add2Exchange and have built relationships, follow these steps:
| 1. | Open the Add2Exchange Console. |
| 2. | Delete all of your relationships BEFORE you uninstall Outlook. Choose to remove the Destination copies for each relationship when prompted. |
| 3. | Exit the Console. |
| 4. | Uninstall Outlook. |
Registering CDO
After having removed Outlook, you will need to re-register the Exchange version of CDO.
| 1. | In Explorer, find the location of your Exchange install. Typically this will under be \Program Files\Exchsrvr on your C: drive or whichever drive you typically install programs. |
| 2. | Verify that the file cdo.dll exists in the "bin" subdirectory of your Exchange install. |
| 3. | From the Start menu, select Run... and run cmd.exe. |
| 4. | Run the following commands. The use of quotes is important. Replace the pathname with whatever is appropriate on your system (e.g. drive letter) If the first command errors with a file not found, this means you have already had the Outlook version of CDO fully uninstalled. This can be safely ignored. |
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033\cdo.dll" /u
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin\cdo.dll"
|
|
Tip Once you have found cdo.dll in Explorer, you can drag and drop the file onto a command prompt to get the full path. Just type "regsvr32" with a trailing space and then drop the file on the window. |
